Why I Chose To Become A Doula
I was in my first semester of nursing school, which consisted of caring for the nursing home population. I was having trouble, emotionally, because I knew this wasn't the type of nursing I wanted to do as a career. (Bless the people who do it, they are great! I developed an interest in Hospice after caring for one of my clients who was actively passing on. What a privalege it is to comfort someone, be a calm presence, and to be one of the last faces a person sees before moving on to their next adventure.) I needed something to help me keep my "eye on the prize". One day I had an epiphany and I was like, "Hello! I should be a birth doula!" I talked the idea over with my husband and with his support, I started my amazing journey. I think it's amazing that our bodies have been giving birth since the beginning of mankind and the process is hard wired in our brains. There is nothing more amazing than seeing a woman harness the power she has had, whithin her, all along.
